You’re a Poet, and You Know It Five-day lesson plan outline
During this residency, each student will learn the fundamentals of poetry — metaphor, imagery, rhyme, meter, musical language, etc. They will also spend significant time learning to revise their poems.
This year I’ve added a new option: An audio CD of the students reading their poems on Day 5. The school will receive a copy of the CD for each teacher, along with all rights to burn additional CDs.
***** Day 1 · Metaphor and imagery. · Where do ideas come from? · Class activities to generate ideas. · Homework: Write a draft of a poem from one of the exercises. Feel free to write additional poems any day, on any subject.
Day 2 · Introduction to revision. · List poems, address poems. · Homework: Revise Day 1 poem. Write a draft of a new poem.
Day 3 · More revision techniques. · Rhyme, meter, musical language. · Homework: Revise Day 2 poem. Write a draft of a poem from class exercises.
Day 4 · More on revision. · Group-created poems, using all poetic techniques learned so far. · Homework: Do a final revision of your favorite poem of the week, and practice reading it aloud. · Optional assignment: Bring a costume or wardrobe accessory so you can dress the part of a poet.
Day 5 · Student poets step up to the microphone and perform their creations, to be compiled on an audio CD. · Applause, applause!
